Important Policies and Procedures
The Defiance Area YMCA is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members and guests. To promote safety and comfort for all, we have developed the following Policies & Procedures. We expect all Members and guests to act in accordance with the policies listed here:
Membership, Guests, and Facility
The YMCA Code of Conduct helps create a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for everyone. By setting clear expectations for members and guests, it promotes positive behavior, protects the well-being of our community, and ensures the Y remains a place where all people feel valued and supported.
A safe pool is a fun pool!
- Lifeguards are in charge of the pool area.
- Please walk at all times.
- No playing on ropes, ladders, or lane lines.
- Please wear YMCA appropriate swim attire.
- No roughhousing, breath-holding, throwing, pushing or dunking.
- Enter the pool feet-first and facing the water.
- Diving is only permitted in designated areas.
- Only Coast Guard approved floatation devices are permitted.
- No food, drink, or gum allowed in the pool area.
- Please shower before entering the pool.
- Swimming is prohibited while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- No glass or hazardous objects.
Swim Test Rules and Procedures:
- All swimmers 13 years old and younger must take a deep end swim test.
- Swimmers 13 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times. That adult must be in the water if the child did not pass the deep end test. If the child passed the deep end test, the adult must stay on the pool deck.
- At any time, regardless of age, if a lifeguard questions a swimmer's ability they can require a swim test.
Swim Test:
The test consists of a jump into the shallow end, fully submerge, swim on back half the lane length, roll to front (on top of the water), swim the remaining length of the lane, climb out and jump into the deep end, and treading water for 30 seconds.
Red Band: Non-swimmer under the age of 14. An adult must actively supervise and accompany the red band swimmer in shallow water.
Green Band: Swimmer. May swim in any area of the pool.
Youth Access:
- Anyone under the age of 10 are not permitted in the wellness center.
- Ages 10-13 are permitted to use the Wellness Center under Adult/Parent supervision.
- Ages 14+ are permitted in the Wellness Center without parent supervision.
Clothing:
- Shirts must be worn at all times.
- No inappropriate or vulgar images on clothing.
- Be modest with your clothing.
- Appropriate shoes must be worn. No sandals or open toed shoes.
Equipment:
- Return all weights to racks after use.
- Wipe down all equipment and machines after use.
- No reserving multiple pieces of equipment during busy times. If someone wants to use the same machine, please let them work in with you or politely ask them to wait.
- Do not excessively slam, drop, or throw any weights or equipment.
Respect:
- Show respect to YMCA members, staff, and other guests at all times.
- Absolutely no horseplay.
- Keep all bags in locker rooms or cubbies.
- Clean/wipe down all equipment after use.
- Use headphones when listening to music - no personal speakers.
- Only YMCA Staff trainers/coaches - no outside trainers or coaches permitted.
